Copper Exploration in Sedimentary Basins – Reducing the Search Space Using a Mineral Systems Approach
Copper is the most widely used metal in renewable energy technologies and critical to global electrification in the energy transition. Currently, copper hosted in sedimentary basins accounts for 20% of copper production worldwide, while discovery of new deposits in basins may be hampered due to a general lack of exposure and fundamental knowledge of different mineralisation styles and mechanisms within basins. A mineral systems approach is vital in order to evaluate basin fertility and aids targeting regions of interest. We adapt the mineral systems approach for basin exploration by adding components utilised by petroleum explorers, such as basin analysis (sequence stratigraphy, structural reconstruction) and scenario testing (numerical modelling). The outcome will provide the evolution of a basin, identify host and source rocks, fluid pathways, fluid triggers events, and timing of potential mineralisation.
