Well, it has been a long while since the HEDG was watered, so it is time to gather again at an historic Hobart pub to discuss anything geoscientific, or not. And to give you some real incentive to do this, we have chosen the darkest and coldest part of the year in which to gather. BUT the date we have decided on is the birthday of the United States – the 4th of July 2024 – at a bar that is well-known for its USican style food – The Winston (technically, The Eagle Hawk Inn), 381 Elizabeth St, North Hobart. The bar is probably named for Sir Winston Churchill (tbc), wartime prime minister of the UK, whose mum was an American. Come along to celebrate the birth of the US, and the fact that the Canadians were then (largely) left alone to develop their own version of North America (we won’t talk about the War of 1812). Downside, The Winston does not accept table bookings so whether we get a table big enough for all is uncertain – I will get there early to try and grab one – but if we are unsuccessful at getting a table big enough for a large mid-winter turnout who want to stay for dinner, we will head 500m down the road to the Black Buffalo Hotel, or possibly the nearby Queens Head (already visited by HEDG in 2023). All AIG members, and fellow geoscientists and mineral industry professionals of any affiliation (plus anyone else) are invited to join these irregular gatherings. They are informal and provide the opportunity to discuss anything geoscientific, or otherwise, over drinks and/or dinner.
