Deborah Lord – Mentoring, and its Value for your Career

Mentoring throughout your career is well-worth investing in. It can provide support, advice, direction and coaching, among other things including networking. It is also a two-way relationship, things discussed in mentoring can be personal and confidential, so it requires trust and letting down your guard, learning and experimenting. So what works and what doesn’t, what’s helpful and what might not be so useful? Should mentoring be formal or informal? Can you be both a mentee and a mentor? What are the differences between a mentor, a sponsor and a champion? Should that investment of time be immediately obvious, or might it only become so sometime in the future? This talk provides reflections on what mentoring has looked like for me over my career as a geologist in the resources sector.

Deborah Lord is a geologist with 35 years’ global experience in the resources sector. She is Chair of the VALMIN Committee, involved in Working Groups for AMEC and JORC and a former Member of the AusIMM Professional Conduct Committee.

Deb is a Director of valuation consultancy VRM, and ASX-listed companies Lunnon Metals and E79 Gold. In 2023 she the first woman to receive the AusIMM’s Presidents Award in its 50-year history.

Formerly BHP Head of Resource Governance, Deb managed resources reporting across the minerals portfolio and multiple exchanges (ASX, NYSE, LSE, JSE). Before that, she spent 17 years at SRK Consulting in Australia and Chile after working with Placer Dome and WMC Resources.
