The latest instalment in the Australian Geoscientist Employment Survey series is open for contributions.  This survey is designed to provide data on trends in geoscientist employment in Australia during the final quarter (September – December) of 2017.

Please contribute to the survey personally, encourage your peers and colleagues to participate and share news of the survey via social media.  The data helps AIG to develop a robust and reliable view of employment trends affecting our profession.  We need as many Australian-based geoscientists as possible to participate.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that a significant increase in exploration activity occurred during the final quarter of the year.  The first successful IPO’s in several years occurred in both Australia and Canada, commodities prices were relatively robust, consultants working in exploration and mining reported an upturn in both current projects and new proposals and employment agencies reported an upturn in demand for mining industry skills, primarily in mining engineering and metallurgy.  The September quarter exploration drilling activity statistics released by the ABS showed that drilling activity, particularly related to greenfield projects, was muted.

This survey is intended to capture the extent to which exploration may be benefiting from a perceived upturn in mining industry activity.

The survey takes only two minutes to complete.  You do not need to be an AIG member to contribute.  No data that could personally identify respondents is collected.  Contributions to the survey are required from both employed and unemployed geoscientists to ensure the relevance of results.  Your completing the survey really helps to make a difference to the standing and knowledge of our profession.

The survey was held back, as it has been in other years, until later in January, after the Christmas and New Year holiday season in Australia.
