IGC 2012

Australia will host the 34th International Geological Congress (IGC) in August 2012.

The IGC has only been held once previously in Australia, in Sydney in 1976.

The Sydney IGC in 1976 heightened interest in the geosciences and led to the development of many new international research alliances. It was followed by several years of increased mineral exploration expenditure.

The 34th ICG will offer delegates an exciting range of pre and post Congress field trips, which offer diverse opportunities to see the region's fascinating geology. A wide-ranging scientific program is being developed under the theme Unearthing our Past and Future. Australia 2012 will also include a GeoExpo, an education outreach program, and a support program to encourage young delegates to attend.

Australia 2012 will demonstrate the crucial role that geoscience plays in the quest for sustainable development. In Australia's case, it is a chance to show how geoscience directly contributes to the future of its resource-based industries, land and water management and mitigation of geohazards in the region.

The Australian Geoscience Council will be the formal organising body responsible for the 34th ICG, Australia 2012.  AIG is contributing both materially and financially to the organisation of the congress, through its membership of the AGC.

News of the congress is available from a web site established specifically for the event http://www.ga.gov.au/igc2012/

The next IGC is being held in Norway during August this year.
