About Us
Our Aims
AIG is the leading professional institute representing geoscientists in all professional sectors throughout Australia. AIG represents members by:
- providing effective representation on issues affecting the status and perception of geoscience professions
- cooperating with other professional institutes on matters of common interest
- ensuring the availability of diverse, educational opportunities for students at all levels
- developing and maintaining standards for professional practice
- providing high quality, accessible, relevant short courses, seminars and conferences
- promoting continued professional development by members
- helping to enhance employment opportunities for geoscience professionals.
AIG Members
Geoscientists have particular expertise in recognising and interpreting the nature and products of physical and chemical processes affecting the way our planet works and sustains life.
Three quarters of Australian geoscientists work in minerals exploration and mining. A further ten percent work in the energy resource industries (coal and petroleum). Growing numbers of geoscientists are engaged in water resource development and management, sustainable development of Earth resources, engineering geology supporting the construction industry and infrastructure development and environmental management and remediation.
How AIG Addresses Member's Interests
AIG's policies, direction and corporate practices, communications with members and relationships with government and other professional bodies are established and managed by its Council (Board of Directors). Branches are largely responsible for the delivery of the benefits of AIG membership to Insttute members.
AIG works closely with other geoscience societies through direct cooperation on specific initiatives and through active membership of the Australian Geoscience Council.
Our Secretariat office can provide contact details for AIG Council members or Branch committees. The Secretariat office, located in Perth, may be contacted with any queries regarding AIG membership, publications, activities, and to raise professional issues with the Council.
