2008-2009 Program
2008/09 is shaping up to be a busy year in Queensland.
TECHNICAL TALKS
AIG runs technical talks as part of BEDG (Brisbane Exploration Discussion Group) and jointly wherever possible with GSA, AusIMM and other geoscience associations. These talks will be posted on the AIG webpage and distributed via the Qld ENewsletter.
The first for the year kicks off on 15th July with a BEDG talk by Sylvia Michael (Geoimage) titled Satellite Imagery Update - Characteristics and Applications.
If you think you have an interesting topic for a BEDG Talk or know of someone passing through Qld who would be willing to give a talk please contact Doug Young on d.young@findex.net.au
CONFERENCES
This year is shaping up to be BIG, with Qld hosting two major conferences:
DRILLING FOR GEOLOGY 2008 will be held in Brisbane in October.
NORTH QLD EXPLORATION AND MINING (NQEM) will be held in Townsville in June 2008 and will coincide with a joint AIG/GSAQ long weekend field trip.
More information and regular updates on both conferences can be found in the Events page
UNIVERSITY STUDENTS SUPPORT
Each year the Qld Branch hosts a combined UQ and QUT Student Night and the next event is scheduled for May 2008 at QUT. The branch also provides financial support to both uni's third year field trips.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Last year the Qld Branch ran four half day professional development workshops and these will continue this year. Likely topics will include:
JORC REPORTIONG (repeated from last year in response to popular demand from people who couldn't make it).
ADVANCED GIS APPLICATIONS FOR GEOLOGISTS (a follow on from the Introduction to GIS workshop held last year).
If you have any suggestions for training topics or would like to volunteer to give a workshop, please contact Mark Berry on mberry@amcconsultants.com.au
PUBLIC RELATIONS
This year the AIG and GSA are combining to run two events during National Science Week in August. Both of these events represent tremendous opportunities to raise the profile and importance of the geosciences to the Queensland community:
BRAINWAVES DISPLAY AT THE EKKA - 7th to 16th August
QUEENSLAND MUSEUM - 20th August
MINERAL INDUSTRY CHRISTMAS PARTIES
As always AIG will host the annual Christmas function in Brisbane and Townsville in December. Stay tuned for dates.
AIG QLD ENEWSLETTER
Throughout the year the Qld Branch distributes regular updates on what is happening around the state. If you want to be on the distribution list - even if you are not an AIG member, please send an email with your details to aig_qld@gil.com.au
